Sony Xperia Z1 vs. Xperia SP

Cell phone shopping is great fun and with new, improved models hitting the market, who can resist upgrading to the latest and greatest smartphone? Sony offers some great models, with two of the most popular being the Sony Experia Z1 C6903 Honami and the Sony Experia SP C5303. Both are internationally compatible GSM Smartphones that come unlocked from Popular Electronics and are offered at discounts of more than 50% off MSRP!

The take-home price between the two Sony Smartphones is significantly different, with the Z1 coming in at more than $150 higher than the SP, so it'll be up to you to decide whether the differences in features between the two are worth the additional cost.

Cell phones these days aren't used for just making phone calls but for going online, downloading apps, taking photos or videos, and the dozens of other tasks these technological marvels are capable of doing. This means a lot of time looking at the display screen, so it's important that it be big enough and clear enough to easily see without getting out your magnifying glass!

Both phones do well here, although the Z1's 5" display with 1920 X 1080 pixels is a little easier on the eyes than the SP's 4.6” display with 720 X 1280 pixels. The Z1 has HD Triluminos™ resolution with an X-Reality™ display providing a crystal clear viewing experience and shatterproof glass. The SP has Corning Gorilla Glass and the Sony Mobile Bravia Engine 2.

Cameras are an important part of any cellphone for most people and, needless to say, both of these Sony phones have a camera, although not of the same quality. The Z1 gives you a whopping 20.7 megapixels, LED flash and auto focus. With the SP, you'll get 8 megapixels and the same auto focus and LED flash. Both have a primary and secondary camera, and both take videos at 1080p, 30fps, and in high-definition.

Both Sony smartphones use Jelly Bean Android OS version 4 for their operating systems and have Bluetooth capabilities. Here are some more specifics on how these Sony smartphone stack up:

SP - Qualcomm® MSM8960Pro Snapdragon™ Chip, dual-core 1.7 GHz CPU, Adreno 320 GPU (Graphics Processing Unit), 8 GB internal memory, 1 GB RAM. Accelerometer, gyro and proximity sensor/ FM stereo radio/ TV-out/ MP3 and MP4 players/ active noise cancellation on a dedicated microphone/ video stabilizer and more. Standby battery time is up to 734 hours. Talk time – up to 19 hours. Music time – up to 39 hours.

Z1 – Qualcom® 800 MSM8974 Snapdragon™ Chip, quad-core 2.2 GHz CPU, 16 GB internal memory, 2 GM RAM. Ambient light sensor, accelerometer, proximity sensor, gyro and magnetometer. Battery standby time – up to 550 hours. Talk time – up to 14 hours.

LiteFuze Cube 500 Watt Premium Voltage Converter

This compact LiteFuze Voltage Converter/Transformer is an incredibly useful technology that gives users traveling anywhere that uses a 220-240v electrical grid the ability to plug in low-energy, 110-120v electronics for automatic conversion usage. It's rated at 500-watts max, but if you'll be using it on a continuous basis, the load shouldn't exceed 300-watts. This makes it an ideal converter for plugging in your cell phone charger or other handheld devices that require a charge but are designed to operate only on 110-120v.

This little transformer is really compact, measuring only about four square inches, and it weighs just 5 pounds. Its size and weight makes it very easy to pack for travel, so if you're headed to Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa or the Middle East and will be taking along any device 500-watts or less needing a 110-120v charge, this is a must have accessory. Of course, with the power restrictions imposed on such a small unit, plugging in a blow dryer, power tool or space heater is definitely a no-no.

This voltage converter is both energy efficient and quiet to use, producing no noise at all. There's a single output socket in front that will accept a three-prong, grounded plug with the U.S. configuration or an ungrounded plug like those used in Europe. There are also two USB slots, each 2.5-volts, so you can plug your cell phone right in just like you were plugging it into the USB port on your personal computer. The USB port also provides a place to plug in your iPod, iPad, iPhone, etc.

The LiteFuze Cube 500-watt transformer converter comes complete with built-in protection against both overloading and overheating. The thermal fuse protection will shut the unit off if it becomes too hot, resetting itself after it's cooled down sufficiently, which may take a few hours. Try this affordably priced converter on your next adventure!

Cooking with Pressure: Tips & Tricks

From stock pots to frying pans, you must select the right kitchen cookware when making your favorite meals. Some food dishes require many pots and pans which can result in a mountain of dirty dishes in the kitchen sink. Pressure cookers, often used in restaurants, offer the home cook a reprieve from long hours in the kitchen and from cleaning multiple pans. From delicate meat dishes to instant chicken broth, these cookers are far different than a standard pan. In this post we’ll explore the benefits of cooking with pressure.

Energy Conservation

Pressure cookers are essentially large pots with locking lids. Because you cook with the lid on, all the heat remains inside the pot. Water molecules constantly move around, extending the heat and warming the food faster than if it was uncovered. As a result, you don't need to use as much energy, such as gas or electricity, to get the food to the proper cooking temperature. The cooking time is nearly cut in half as well, reducing energy use even further.

Safe Cooking Strategy

If you have young children running about, the kitchen can be a dangerous place to be. From splattering oil to boiling water, most parents strive to keep the kids occupied in another room. However, pressure cookers need their lid to work effectively. Because it's locked firmly, kids can't take the lid off out of curiosity. There's no threat of bubbling food flying out of the pot either. Although people should still be diligent about kitchen safety, pressure cookers make the area a little less dangerous.

In a Hurry?

If you suddenly have family members joining you for dinner, a fast cooking experience is needed to feed everyone. Pressure cookers confine the heat to the food directly, rather than allowing it to waft away. They have extremely short cooking times, such as 30 or 45 minutes, depending on the chosen food. You could conceivably have a spectacular meal for your family in less than an hour.

Meats Cooked Tender

Meats falling off the bone typically take more than half a day to cook at a slow temperature, such as on the stove or in a smoker. Traditional meats, including pot roast, pork shoulder or beef brisket, come out just as juicy and tender with a pressure cooker. The meat bathes in its own juices while heat infiltrates down to the bone. Select a large pressure cooker for those big meat cuts.

Chicken Stock Solution

If you've ever made your own chicken stock, you understand the time commitment to simmer the meat and water. Pressure cookers, however, extract the meat essence and create a rich broth without the hours of waiting. Simply season the meat and add water to the cooker. In as little as 30 minutes, your stock could be ready.

There are literally hundreds of recipes ready for the pressure cooker. Do make note of certain foods that aren't compatible with these high-pressure machines, including oatmeal. You want to cook a food that won't froth or expand excessively. Place your favorite meals in the cooker, set it, and get ready for a mouthwatering experience at dinner.

Product Spotlight: ZAQ Mini LiteMist Aromatherapy Essential Oil Diffuser

Essential oils became popular during the 20th century for use as an antiseptic and in ointments, and later, for its use in inhalation. Steam diffusion of these oils into the air and then inhaled was found to be beneficial for a variety of respiratory treatments, including decongestion, disinfection and expectoration. Inhaling of steam-diffused essential oils of different types was also found to have beneficial psychological effects.

Aromatherapy essential oil diffusers have become very popular in the past few years, both for home use and also for use commercially in businesses such as beauty salons, health clubs, massage facilities, etc. The invigorating environment created by use of aromatherapy is quite agreeable to many, just as the scent of cinnamon or potpourri is favored by just about everyone. But they do much more than just smell good.

Drops of peppermint added to the mini diffuser seen here can soothe nausea and other digestive problems, ease a sore throat and help with headaches. Lavender soothes nerves, fights joint pain and improves sleep. Other beneficial essential oils include rose, geranium, sesame, clove, pine, lemon and more.

If you use aromatherapy at home or at work, you may likely already have one or more diffusers in your possession. The ZAQ Mini LiteMist Aromatherapy Essential Oil Diffuser seen here is the perfect addition to your collection, allowing you to bring the benefits of aromatherapy with you wherever you go. Small, compact and totally portable, its battery operation lets you use essential oil diffusion when traveling or when visiting friends for the weekend. It holds a relatively small 20 ml of water yet, with a drop or two of your favorite, fragrant oil, will immediately start to produce the water-diffused aroma you desire.

Equipped with LED lights and an automatic shut off function, the mini diffuser is safe to operate and easy to employ. Just fill it up and switch it on. The innovatively designed diffuser looks attractive and also serves to improve the free dispersion of moisture and aroma. The unit is built from top-quality materials and made durably to last for many years. It uses four AA batteries but may also be powered by a five-volt DC micro adapter. Essential oils are also sold separately and there are many from which to choose. Enjoy!

Plug Adapters for Worldwide Travel

When you’re traveling abroad, there are numerous items you need to make sure you have before you take your trip. You’ve got your passport, the appropriate clothes, your prescriptions, your laptop, an iPad, and a global cell phone. What you may have overlooked is a travel plug adapter that will allow you to plug in and recharge all those electronics no matter what country you’re going to. You could pick an adapter up at the airport when you arrive, but that is likely to cost you a fortune. Instead, plan ahead and order an affordable one online from Popular Electronics. Which one is right for your trip? This post will help you answer that question.

LiteFuze Universal Plug Adapter with USB Charger

The LiteFuze is the most versatile of all the plug adapters as it accepts all plugs and works as an adapter in over 150 countries. The best part is that it has a built in USB port that enables you to charge your cell phone while also charging your laptop or other large electronics. So whether you’re in Brazil, Europe or Japan, you’ll always be able to plug in your electronics.

Universal Plug Adapter Type I for Australia, New Zealand & China

The universal plug adapter type 1 is suitable for all those planning travel to the Australian outback, New Zealand and the Great Wall of China. It accepts plugs from all countries including the US, but does not convert voltage as some other adapters. Despite this, this adapter is a great option given its improved conductivity and insulated design.

Universal Plug Adapter Type J for Switzerland

Did you know that Switzerland has a slightly different type of outlet than the rest of continental Europe? Unfortunately, it’s true, so in order to avoid a giant headache, we recommend ordering yours today. The Type J adapter accepts all plugs and is built to last with the new insulated design.

Type G 2 in 1 Plug Adapter for UK, Hong Kong & Singapore

Traveling to the UK this summer to visit London or see Tiger Woods in the British Open? Better have this Type G 2 in 1 adapter packed. Like the other adapters, the Type G accepts all plugs but also has a bonus feature – a top receptacle for ungrounded two prong plugs. Conveniently charge two electronics as once with this affordable adapter.

Type L 2 in 1 Plug Adapter for Italy & Uruguay

Traveling to Uruguay and Chile after the World Cup Final or visiting the Tuscan wine region this fall? If so, we recommend bringing along the three pronged Type L 2 in 1 adapter. Like the Type G, the Type L also has an additional receptacle for convenient multi-charging.

Product Spotlight: Sony DAV-DZ790 All Region Free DVD Player Home Theater System

One of the best parts about going out for a movie theater experience at ten bucks a ticket is the awesome sound systems most of today’s modern theaters have installed. How they’ve managed to do it at such a low price is impressive, but now Sony has created a tremendous-sounding DVD/Home Theater combination that blows the doors off the typical cinema setup because it’s right there in your house, surrounding you with crisp sound, putting you right in the middle of the action.

Another great feature with this Sony DAV-DZ790 is that it’s all region, meaning it can play any DVD released in any of the 10 global regions. It also plays both PAL and NTSC formats as long as you get the proper converter. But one of the best bits about this super sounding Sony is that you can walk right up to it with your portable, hand-held device like your tablet or your MP3, and get your music loud and clean with 1000 watts of power on tap!

This unit will play anywhere in the world, compatible with 110-222v AC and 50/60 Hz. The dual voltage allows you to take it if you move overseas, or to play discs that were purchased overseas, in another DVD Region. This home theater sound system with DVD player looks sweet, sounds super and will make a huge improvement to your current listening and movie watching area. The 5.1-channel amplifier feeds five speakers: a center speaker and four surrounding, adjustable floor towers. You have the option of adding a rear, wireless speaker for true surround sound.

With one thousand watts of power available to pump out of these speakers you should have no trouble popping in an HD disc to your big screen and replicating the cinema theater experience, or making it even better. The plug and play ease of connecting a portable device allows you to play music, show pictures or send any data through the USB port. Other features include:

• Plays just about every possible format of DVD and CD
• 1080p HDMI (high definition multimedia interface) output
• 20 FM and 10 AM radio tuning presets
• Converts PAL to NTSC
• Remote control
• JPEG viewer

The Sony DAV-DZ790 is also S-Air ready, meaning that the unit can send audio signals wirelessly throughout your house or to any separate rooms through the use of a clock radio-like receiver. These signals are capable of traveling up to 164 feet while still producing quality sound. This home theater system is part of Sony Bravia’s line of wireless, home theater in a box systems and, as such, comes with the new remote that controls your TV, sound system and DVD player.

Product Spotlight: Sony KLV-32V550A Multi-System HDTV

One look at Sony's KLV-32V550A BRAVIA 32-inch LCD television is all it takes to convince you that a great quality, feature-packed TV can be affordable too. This is a multi-system unit that not only receives TV signals regardless of whether they're NTSC, PAL or SECAM, but also has a power supply that operates on either 110/240-volt electric supply and at 50/60 Hz. That makes this television operable just about anywhere in the world.

The KLV-32V550A will show both standard definition and high definition signals, with acceptable HD formats including 720p, 1080p or 1080i. It also has a USB computer input that allows you to hook up your PC, camcorder, digital camera or flash drive. This allows you to view your pictures or video files clearly and in rich, textured color on the 32" LCD screen. Unparalleled color, depth and clarity are all made possible through the BRAVIA Engine™ 3 video processor. A "Live Color" function allows you to select any of four image quality color options that provide the ultimate in fine color tuning.

Sound Quality to Match the Impressive Picture

Just as impressive as the picture quality, the sound generated by the Sony KLV-32V550A BRAVIA, while produced through just two 10-watt speakers, provides a front surround sound field through the use of Sony's S-Force technology. Sound modes include standard, dynamic and clear voice, while surround modes feature cinema, music, sports and video game. An MPEG noise reduction function automatically cleans up noise to produce crisp, clear sounds. Sony's Intelligent Picture automatically boosts weak signals from analog broadcasts that further serves to reduce noise and improve picture clarity.

Extra Features

An impressive selection of eleven different picture modes gives users the opportunity to dial up the exact viewing mode for their specific viewing needs. This includes a special vivid setting that boosts contrast and sharpness, three different modes for viewing photographs and settings for games, graphics and sporting events.

A BRAVIA Sync mode allows you to plug other entertainment components into your TV and control them all with your TV remote and also sync them for one-push button play or shut down. Built-in clock and sleep timer add to the convenience of this set, a built-in headphone output allows you to listen without disturbing others, an ambient light sensor adjusts the picture automatically and the included TV stand both tilts and swivels.

Product Spotlight: Samsung Galaxy S5 G900H Unlocked GSM Smartphone

You've already heard that the Galaxy S5 is the latest and the greatest smartphone on the market and certainly one of the most popular cell phones ever made and you just want to know, in simple terms, what it will do for you.

For starters, this phone looks good with its matte-textured finish and huge, 5.1", touch-sensitive AMOLED display screen. In case you're interested, AMOLE stands for Active Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode (LED). Something called "Gorilla Glass" made by Corning is used to make the display resistant to scratches or other damage. The phone weighs in at only 145 grams, so it not only looks good but feels good too.

When using your Galaxy S5 to transmit data you'll be impressed by the blisteringly fast speeds achieved due to the dual Wi-Fi antennas and the ability to use Wi-Fi and LTE (Long Term Evolution) together, simultaneously. Surfing the Internet on a hand-held device has never been quicker or easier!

The built-in, 16 mega-pixel camera can take photos and videos even when there's too little or too much light and will auto-correct the display image so what you see is what you get. Take up to 4K of video, which includes a slow-motion function and also a unique, post-capture refocus option. The camera is awesome, taking less than a third of a second to focus. After you've taken a picture you're than offered three different focus level options, including near, far and pan.

The Galaxy S5's battery is a 2800 mAh that can go for as long as 21-hours talk time, although this will be considerably less if you're playing games, watching videos, etc. There's a power saving mode that allows you to extend battery life when the power is low and you're expecting an important call or text. There's also an ultra-power saver that turns off all unnecessary features and turns the display to black and white.

A built-in fingerprint scanner can be used for phone security and will accept as many as three different people's prints, although each can still secure their private data from the eyes of the other two. This biometric scanner can even be used to authorize payments through PayPal. Additionally, you can use your phone to monitor several health factors including your heart rate, which can be displayed at the mere touch of a button. The unit also features a complete fitness tracker that can be personalized to your diet and exercise regimens. It's also got a built-in pedometer for measuring distances walked, calories burned, speed and duration.

There's more to mention, and if you need more technical details they're available here. These phones are unlocked at the factory so are able to work with any compatible service provider. Plus, the price is right!
